Gloucester- Southgate
Diane Deans was first elected to Ottawa City Council in November 1994. In November 2006, Deans was re-elected to her fifth consecutive term. She proudly represents the nearly 40,000 south-end residents who live in Gloucester-Southgate Ward at Ottawa City Council.
Diane Deans is best known for her hard work and dedication to her constituents and has championed many important projects in her 15 years as a City Councillor. Among her greatest accomplishments to date, Deans sites the construction of the new 29,000 square foot Greenboro District Library which serves communities throughout the south-end of Ottawa; saving the Greenboro Turtlehead Nature area – an environmentally sensitive wetland from development; and establishing a Business Park Association to give voice to the over 600 businesses in her ward.
Councillor Deans believes in providing quality public services at a cost taxpayers can afford. She has worked tirelessly during budget deliberations to ensure services important to the public are adequately funded and that taxes are minimized. She has been recognized as an effective leader who is credited with successfully leading the charge to keep taxes low.
In 2006, Deans was elected the Chairperson of the Community and Protective Services Committee, the largest City committee, responsible for providing policy direction to a wide array of City departments, including: By-law Services, Fire, Paramedics, Housing, Employment and Financial Assistance, Public Health, Community and Cultural Services and Parks and Recreation.
Diane Deans is a strong advocate of improving emergency response times for fire and paramedic services and has successfully overseen major improvements in the City’s ambulance service. Deans also serves on the Corporate Services and Economic Development Committee, the Audit, Budget and Finance Committee, the Ottawa Gatineau Film Television Board, the Ottawa Tourism Board and the provincial Social Housing Services Corporation board. Deans is also co-chair of the 2009 City of Ottawa United Way Campaign.
Diane Deans holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Guelph. In 2006 Deans received the Consumers’ Choice Woman of the Year Award.
