The City of Ottawa is ready to begin building and implementing the priority projects of its new Rapid Transit System. The City is ready to act and is well positioned to take full advantage of the comprehensive infrastructure investment plan recently announced by the federal government, including $4 billion aimed at creating new jobs to help our local economy. ![]() The City of Ottawa is extremely pleased with its plans to deliver a highly innovative, rapid, sustainable and more reliable transit network. During the planning stage, the City consulted extensively with thousands of Ottawa residents and the business community who strongly supported the transit plan to address congestion in the downtown core with the construction of a downtown transit tunnel. City Council voted overwhelmingly in favour of the plan. The City’s Transitway is already recognized internationally. Once implemented, the new system will take our world-class transit to an even higher level of customer service. This plan will enable Ottawa to transform itself into a sustainable transit city that leaves the smallest environmental footprint possible, while fostering an ecologically sound society. The transit plan is feasible and affordable. However, given the scope and extended period of investment needed to guarantee success, the City requires the long-term financial support of its funding partners at the federal and provincial levels. The City is also asking all stakeholders who share an interest in the transit network to pledge support for the new system. We are asking everyone to get on board. It is clear that we all have an important role to play in the implementation of the transit system. All levels of government and the private sector need to work together to ensure we deliver a world-class, rapid, reliable and sustainable transit network that will benefit Ottawa residents for generations to come. The City expects that the federal and provincial governments will see this as an opportunity to achieve our common objective, each by committing to the long-term funding of our transit system. If we want Ottawa to remain a world-class G8 national capital city, we must continue to invest in its future. We are ready to take action!
