Ottawa's 30-Year Waste Plan
Managing Ottawa’s Waste
The City is developing a plan to manage Ottawa’s waste over the next 30 years, during which time Ottawa is expected to grow by 300,000. The City needs a plan to guide progress towards achieving the National Capital area’s vision of zero waste.
Timelines
Developing the plan will take approximately 18 months, with the expectation that Council will approve the final plan in December 2012. The project is broken down into three phases.
Phases
- Phase 1 - Establish vision, goals and targets - Summer/Fall 2011
- Phase 2 - Develop strategies to achieve goals and targets - Spring/Summer 2012
- Phase 3 - Develop short-term plan and budget for the first 10 years - Fall 2012

Phase 1 findings
A report to Council summarized Phase 1 activities and the key findings from stakeholders and the public. The recommended draft vision, objectives and targets presented in this report — Ottawa’s Waste Plan Phase 1 — were approved by Council in November 2011.
Where are we now?
Phase 2 is underway. This phase will examine a variety of options for achieving the Ottawa’s Waste Plan objectives. Opportunities for public input during Phase 2 will take place in Spring 2012.
