Waste Management for the Britannia and
Lemieux Island WPPs Project
The process waste generated at the Britannia and Lemieux Island Water Purification Plants (WPPs) originates from both the settling and filter backwashing processes. Since the plants were built, these process wastes from the plants, comprised of settled and filtered particulate materials, have been discharged back to the Ottawa River.
Following provincial orders to discontinue this practice, the City of Ottawa completed a study in October 2002 that followed the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) process for a Schedule B project, to select a management practice to divert these materials from the river.
The selected alternative consisted of discharging the process sludges to the City's sanitary collection system for treatment at ROPEC. The project is currently in the design phase and construction is scheduled to begin in this spring.
