McIlraith Bridge Rehabilitation

Notice of Study Commencement
(Smyth Road and Main Street over Riverside Drive and the Rideau River)

The City of Ottawa has initiated a study for the rehabilitation of the McIlraith Bridge spanning the Rideau River and Riverside Drive at Main Street (west approach) and Smyth Road (east approach). The work consists of a detailed bridge condition survey, structural evaluation and determination of rehabilitation needs, including structural and geometrical requirements. The culmination of this study will be a comprehensive report detailing the condition of the existing structure and rehabilitation options including estimates of expected construction costs.

The project will be implemented in the following phases:

  • Phases 1 to 3: Condition survey, evaluation and reporting - summer/fall 2005 (Complete)
  • Phase 4: Rehabilitation design - 2010
  • Phase 5: Rehabilitation construction - 2011 / 2012

The City has retained Harmer Podolak Engineering Consultants Inc. to carry out the work of Phases 1 to 3. The field condition survey will start in mid-June and be completed by mid-July 2005. The deck survey is scheduled to take place in two weekends. Minor traffic disruptions might be experienced on the bridge and on Riverside Drive during the condition survey.
