Family Day in Ontario
The Ontario Government has announced that the third Monday of February will be a new recognized Civic Holiday. Here are some tips to help you make the most of Family Day and celebrate our heritage:
- Bring your family to one of our national museums or take a virtual museum visit from the comfort of your home computer
- Take time to sit with relative looking at old pictures and discover forgotten memories
- While looking at old photos, make note of people’s names so that future generations can know who they are looking at.
- Write and perform a play or song based on your grandparent’s lives.
- Cook a meal from an old family recipe using local ingredients.
- Write a letter to a family member you haven’t met yet.
- Ask your parents about that favourite aunt or uncle and what they liked about them
- Sit down with your family and draw a Family Tree and tell stories about their ancestors
- Break out a map of Canada or the World and talk about the origins of your family
- Take a walk and discover your community; its buildings and its people
- Turn off the TV and computer, and imagine what time was like without them; make your own “electricity free” activities
